Ambulatory Surgery Center
At Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center, we specialize in same-day surgery. After surgery you return to the comfort of your own home. Studies show that a familiar, comfortable environment helps to speed recovery.
Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center is located next to Colleton Medical Center at: 304 Medical Park Drive, Walterboro, SC 29488 (see map below). We can be reached from 7:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at (843) 549-0700. After hours you may leave a voice message and your call will be returned the next business day.
Your surgeon's office will schedule the date and time of your surgery, which may be based on the availability of operating rooms. You will also receive a telephone call from the surgery center with general surgery and insurance information. Plan to arrive one hour before your scheduled surgery time.
Patient Registration
- Bring your insurance card(s), social security number and a photo ID, as well as your co-payment and/or deductible amount.
- You will be asked to sign consent forms before your surgery.
- If you need a signed excuse or worker's compensation excuse for an employer, please ask your surgeon's office to provide one.
Your surgery, step by step
The following outlines the general information you will need to know before your surgery. Please follow all the instructions carefully to ensure that every aspect of your planned visit proceeds smoothly.
- You must have someone designated to drive you home that will remain on site during your surgery.
- Adults and children over six years old, do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery.
- Take your usual medication except for aspirin, coumadin, insulin or diuretics such as Lasix or Hydrochlorothiazide on the morning of surgery with as little water as possible. If you take insulin, bring your vials of insulin with you. Do not take insulin the day of surgery unless otherwise specified by your physician. If you have asthma, bring your inhaler with you.
- Bring all medications you are currently taking.
- Bring any items such as crutches, X-rays, etc., that your physician has indicated.
- A nurse will evaluate your medical history and current medications.
- An anesthesiologist or CRNA will speak with you and answer any questions you have.
- Due to limited space, we ask that you bring no more than two family members with you.
- Please have any pre-operative lab tests, EKG, etc., completed prior to the day of surgery.
- Leave any valuables at home.
- Remove jewelry, makeup and nail polish.
- Wear warm, comfortable clothing.
- Please inform any family members or friends planning to wait for you at the center to wear or bring warm clothing because the surgery center may be cold.
- There is a lounge with a television and magazines along with vending machines in the building.
- After your surgery, you will be offered beverages, but we do not provide food.
- On average most patients stay approximately 45 minutes following surgery, depending on the type of procedure.
If the patient is a child
- They may have clear liquids up to two hours before their surgery time (apple juice, breast milk, Gatorade, water).
- Children two to six years old cannot have food after midnight. They may have clear liquids only up to four hours before surgery.
- One or both parents (or guardians) must remain at Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center while your child is at our facility.
- A parent or guardian must sign release permits for surgery if the child is under 18.
- Guardians must bring written proof of guardianship. If this documentation is not presented, surgery may be delayed.
- Children may bring their favorite bottle, toy and/or blanket.

Financial Arrangements
The staff at Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center looks forward to serving you. Our policy states that the patient is required to pay his/her co-payment and deductible at the time of services. As a courtesy, we will attempt to send you a letter 7-10 days prior to your surgery to inform you of your specific obligations. If you would like information prior to that time, please stop by between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or call us at (843) 549-0704.
- The balance of any charges for previous patient services at Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center should be paid in full prior to your currently scheduled surgery.
- Your doctor's office is responsible for acquiring pre-certification numbers before the time of surgery, or you will either be held accountable for the bill or your surgery will be rescheduled.
- You will receive a statement for any unpaid balances following insurance payment.
- Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center does not accept letters of protection for such occurrences as Worker's Compensation or injury.
- Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center accepts Visa, Mastercard, cash and personal checks.
- Please be aware that you will receive a bill from the surgeon, the anesthesiologist or CRNA and Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center. If you are having a biopsy, cultures or any tissue removed, you may also receive a pathology bill. The surgery center bills and makes financial arrangements for their services only.

Pain Management

Scheduling
You and your physician will schedule the date and time of the procedure at our center, which is based on the availability of rooms. If you are having a pain block, plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your procedure.

Your procedure, step by step

- Contact your physician about eating and drinking requirements prior to your procedure.
- If you are taking Coumadin, please contact your physician. We recommend you stop taking it four days prior to your procedure.
- Bring all medications you are currently taking.
- Bring any items such as films, CT scans, MRI results, etc. that your physician has indicated.
- A nurse will assess your medical history and medications and will answer any questions you have.
- You must have someone designated to drive you home that remains on site.
- Due to limited space, we ask that you bring no more than two family members with you.
